Introduction

The RFS Career Academy Coaching and Mentoring Programme is free to join and provides military spouses and the Armed Forces Community with the confidence, focus, and clarity of direction to achieve personal working goals and create a sustainable future.

The programme recognises that every candidate is at different stages of their journey to finding career satisfaction; by applying a bespoke, person-centred approach, we offer the best possible service to our candidates.

The programme currently has 70 active coaches who generously volunteer their time. Demand for a place on the programme is high— in January 2023, we received over 40 enquiries, with 21 candidates being ‘matched’ with coaches/mentors.

We are now actively recruiting for new coaches/mentors to support the programme and reduce our waiting list times!

Background & Challenge

Holly is a military spouse. She has been married to Andrew (Army) for over 21 years. They have two children age 19 & 15. Since they have been together, the family have been posted to 11 locations, and are now currently based in South Cerney, Cirencester. They are living in Service Family Accommodation on the army base, but are due to be posted to Brunei in October. This will be Andrew’s final posting. Holly registered for a place on the Virgin Mentoring Programme in September 2023, after seeing it advertised on RFS social media. She had undertaken the coaching programme with RFS a number of years ago and found it hugely beneficial; she hoped the current programme could aid her with her employment challenges. Holly needed support switching careers from teaching to project management.  Holly didn't know how to approach the transition nor how to take the next step up the career ladder. Holly was matched with a Virgin mentor with experience in customer management and relationships. During the course of the programme, the mentor met with Holly over a 6 month period.  The mentor supported Holly to build confidence, particularly focusing on limiting beliefs. They also worked on leadership and goal setting, creating a 5 year plan on how to achieve goals aligned with her personal values.

The 5 year plan was a great takeaway for me - as a spouse it is really difficult to make a 5 year plan because of mobility. Now my husband is coming to the end of his military career, it was really valuable to do this and evaluate what is important to me.

Outcome

The programme gave Holly the opportunity to access support at a period of her life when she needed assistance to make a significant career change. Holly would recommend the programme to any spouse needing career support. She has secured her first interview for a project management role.

I have loved being a volunteer coach and partnering women - moving from where they are when I first meet them, to where they want to be. There is something really special about being a part of that persons life for a short time and helping them to help themselves and move forwards with their goals at their own pace and in their own way.
