What is your career background?
I completed my degree in Creative Event Management in 2012 at The Arts University Bournemouth. I went on to work as the Event Coordinator for The Royal Bath and West Agricultural Show. After a number of years here, I moved to London and worked as an Office Manager and Personal Assistant for a couple of Fin Tech start-up businesses, before starting as a virtual EA for Combat Pest Control in March 2018.
Why did you approach Recruit for Spouses?
I wanted to continue to be challenged in my career and work for a company that understood the military lifestyle. I knew I was facing at least three short postings in the next couple of years and wanted a role I could do from home.
Can you tell us a bit about the process you undertook with Recruit for Spouses?
I initially registered with RFS online and would scour the website regularly for a role that suited. When the role came up, I was certain it had the small team vibe and variation of tasks I was after. I spoke with both Charlie and Heledd in-depth about whether I could be the right fit. They offered some great advice and I put forward my application. I was selected for a phone interview with Michael, which lasted around an hour. A few days later, RFS contacted me to offer me the role.
Can you briefly explain the job you do?
I get quite heavily involved in the customer service side of things for Combat, dealing with follow-up appointments, some sales as well as invoicing. I manage the administration for their larger contracts and deal with much of the company’s HR and payroll. Michael and Des also run the De-classified podcast so I look after hotel and travel bookings and any admin tasks or proof reading they require.
What challenges did you face in the search for your new job?
Finding a virtual role was really difficult, and I didn’t want to look for a short-term role.
What has been your proudest moment?
Coordinating an event for 150,000 people and 12,000 livestock was probably one of my proudest career moments.
Why is being in work so important to you?
It gives me daily challenges and my own identity. Sometimes I find being an Army spouse quite suffocating.
What difference has being back in work made to you?
I was lucky to only have a couple of months out of work, but having this role has given me security and support from a family team.
As a military spouse, what has been your biggest obstacle when trying to balance work/kids/your spouse’s military commitments?
I am very lucky to have great managers who are flexible. If I need to change my working times due to military commitments, it is no issue.
What advice would you give fellow military spouses who want to get back into work, retrain for a new career or start their own business?
Don’t give up. Amazing and flexible companies do exist and RFS are 100% the best people to help you find them.
